Hide your files from other users

Do you share your PC with other users? Maybe they're nosy, or you've got files you don't want to share. My Lockbox is a great little solution for the user who wants to keep some files away from prying eyes.

After installation, a destination folder is chosen to be locked, and a password must be given, along with a reminder question. It's then necessary to restart Windows. Once done, there is a My Lockbox icon, which when double clicked prompts you for the password, which in turn gives access to the destination folder.

Adding files to your locked folder is the same as with any folder, but when you 'lock' it, it will disappear. The locked folder is only visible when My Lockbox is open and unlocked.

This application is not serious security, as it does not encrypt files, but for average desktop users, it provides a solid privacy service. However, if government agents come knocking, looking for those secret extra terrestrial files you stole, you will be in trouble, and should have used an proper encryption application.

Window Ruler is exactly what it says it is - and application for measuring windows. This is more likely to be useful to web developers than anyone.

Installation is easy, and you can keep it running in the background with a little icon in the system tray should you need it. Window Ruler can be used in two ways. Firstly, you can drag the horizontal and vertical rulers to the length you require, or secondly you can drag the rulers over a window with the red button, and it will automatically adjust to the size of the window.

You can get a precise measurement for your window in pixels, points, centimeters, millimeters or inches. There are very few other options available in Window Ruler, except choosing to hide it or not, and changing screen resolutions.

It's not possible to change the angle of the rulers, in case you want to measure something diagonal, and using it on more than one monitor is a little buggy. It has a habit of snapping out of view, and need to be restarted to work again.

Window Ruler is of limited use, suffers from slightly idiosyncratic design and is neither attractive nor user friendly.

There are roughly five areas to explore within ZAC Browser - drawing, interactive stories, songs, music and games. All of these areas can be explored further, with many more options within each category.

The browser itself is not modifiable - there are no configuration options - and although I looked hard, I couldn't find a full description of the content. The options I tried seemed very appropriate for children, but as there doesn't seem to be a definitive list of providers, any prospective parent would have to either trust ZAC Browser or individually check each option, a potentially time-consuming task.

Basic tool for creating multiple folders

Creating one new folder is no problem for most of us, but what if you need to create ten, or even a thousand? New Folder Wizard might be the answer.

New Folder Wizard is a small program that doesn't require installation. It is very basic, and doesn't even have a help file, but carries out its job quickly and efficiently. It won't do anything fancy, but it will automatically create a range of files (from 1 to 20,000) and name them with either a number and your choice of prefix and/or suffix, or by using a list of folder name that you create and save as a .TXT file.

New Folder Wizard has a preview function so you can see exactly how your filing structure will look when it is finished and it will warn you if you have accidentally created duplicates. You can also specify the frequency of the number-based naming system and copy the list of new file names to the clipboard, so you can review and modify it before importing it to New Folder Wizard again.

It's not every day you'll need to create 20,000 folders, but when you do, you can bank on New Folder Wizard to do the job.

Browse without a mouse

No Mouse is a Firefox extension that aims to liberate desktop users from the tyranny of having to move their hands to use the mouse while browsing the Web.

How No Mouse manages to retire the mouse is by enabling a series of hot-key commands that allow you to hit links without pointing at them. If you're too tired to move the mouse, hit Ctrl + Alt + 7 to index the page you're viewing. It will then show a number next to every hyperlink on a page.

To open a link, hit Ctrl + Alt + 8 to open a new tab, or Ctrl + Alt + 9 to open it in the same tab. Using these controls opens a little window into which you enter the number of the link you want, then hit return. If that all sounds a bit long winded, it soon becomes pretty simple. It's not as quick as using your mouse, but it keeps your hands on the keyboard.

The nice thing about No Mouse is that it doesn't automatically stick numbers on links unless you tell it to. Pages don't look pretty with all that extra text, so it's nice that it's not automatic. If you want the links indexed automatically, that can be done in Add-ons options.

This doesn't really offer anything to laptop users with a touch-pad, but for desktop users there is something to it. For the type of user that loves hot-key commands, No Mouse will be really intuitive. For everyone else, it takes some getting used to, but isn't really complicated.

Improve system responsiveness and stability in high load situations

One of most common reasons for your PC slowing down is processes that are hogging your system and taking all your CPU.

Process Lasso aims to solve this problem by reducing the priority of those processes that are not important and returned to a responsive level. It also works with multiple processes that are causing a problem so it can deal with more than one program at once. If you think that the program is prioritising the wrong processes, then you can define default processes that you want to be controlled or kept an eye on. Process Lasso also displays graphs and other graphical represeantations to show you which processes are requiring the most CPU usage. You can blacklist those processes that are showing rather high graph readings or that are clearly taking up more CPU usage than they deserve. Although the program requires no experience, it does offer advanced settings and twesking options to make sure that it only blocks those processes that are specified or targeted by yourself. Fortunately, the program itself is very low on resources so it will not add to your CPU hogging problems.

A very useful process monitor than will ensure your CPU only dedicates itself to those programs that really need it.

There's nothing more frustrating than desperately wanting to share a photo with someone but finding that it's too big to send by e-mail or upload to a photo sharing site.

MicroPic is an instant image resizer for those that simply can't be bothered altering resolutions, resizing and retouching their photos and images. It's an ideal tool for those designers that regularly need to make thumbnails, avatars or upload them rapidly to a website.

The program works on a drag-and-drop principle - simply drag your image into the program screen and you'll instantly be presented with three resized options. The problem is that it can only read BMP or JPG formats and it outputs files only in JPG format which is rather restricting.

On the plus side, the program doesn't even require any installation whatsoever and it can convert multiple images at the same time. It can also insert a © copyright message if you want to protect your photos and round-off your images with smoother edges. Alternatively, you can also insert a watermark with the message of your choosing.

It's not a particularly flexible photo resizer in terms of formats supported but it's an ultra fast solution for anyone who needs to resize images in a hurry.

Mac OS X theme for WindowBlinds

The skins feature the classic Aqua and Graphite schemes and the newly introduced Platinum scheme which you can find in the System Preferences and Mail programs in Mac OS X 10.4. They've also included Brushed with over 20 substyles added for good measure. The Apple menu is unfortunately, not an exact copy of the original but it's pretty close. It's basically a stripped down Start Menu that has been made to look like the Apple menu in Mac OS X. In addition, there are also left and right handed titlebar buttons for those that want their PC to look like a Mac but at the same time keep their right handed Windows buttons. The look and feel is remarkably Apple although Windows keeps creeping through especially with it's annoying sounds sometimes to spoil the illusion. If you have any widgets installed, you may also find that they don't show with this installed.

A great skin for those that either can't afford a Mac or those that simply prefer the elegant Mac look and style.

These days we've seen plenty of tools to save YouTube videos to your hard drive but what if you only want to save the soundtrack?

You can do so very easily with Free Youtube to MP3 Converter which as the name suggests, takes YouTube videos and saves them to your hard drive in MP3 format. After the Ask.com toolbar installation (uncheck all three boxes if you don't want the toolbar), it's plain sailing. You can copy and paste links into the interface and queue them up for extraction.

The extraction process is not the fastest I've ever seen in an app like this but it's not slow by any means. You can select from 4 presets up to 256Kbs which is a very high quality of conversion and ideal for those that need to use the clip for high quality editing. You can also add tags to your extractions to make them easier to find when you search for them on your desktop.

Control volume with the mouse wheel

Volumouse is a tine application that makes volume control and other things available from your mouse - ideal for those times a surprisingly loud song or program blasts out of your speakers or headphones!

The application puts an icon in the system tray, so you barely notice it's running unless you need it! The basic setup is that the left-button held, with the mouse wheel will control volume, as will the Alt key plus the mouse wheel. Once you try, it's so natural you might wonder why it's not already a Windows feature.

You can add four more mouse wheel rules, to control lots of things from screen brightness to window transparency. The interface is hardly beautiful, but it is clear and functional, and is unlikely to be a problem for anyone to understand. Volumouse is totally portable - so you can run it from a USB stick on any Windows PC you like. There's nothing bad about Volumouse - if it sounds useful to you, it does the job excellently.

Volumouse is an excellent tool for adding volume or other control to your mouse wheel.

Prevent web distractions with this Firefox add-on

If you don't trust yourself enough not to waste time visiting games, video and social networking sites when you should be working, then LeechBlock could be what you need.

Alternatively, LeechBlock could be used to stop you being constantly plagued by ads or messages from sites that you have no interest in. It could even be used by concerned parents to block kids from visiting certain sites in Firefox (although the developer does not advise using it for this purpose).

The nice thing about LeechBlock is that you can configure it to block sites between a specific time period, so you don't have to keep activating and de-activating it if you want occasional access to a site. This includes between certain times, specific moments in time, or a combination of both.

Principally though it's been designed for those with a wandering mouse cursor, which is why it even allows you to set a password to access prohibited sites to help "slow you down" in moments of weakness. If you can't help yourself, then LeechBlock will track the amount of time you've spent on blocked sites. Adding sites to your 'blocked' list is easy - just go the the LeechBlock extension in your add-on manager and click 'Options' to add a site.

The concept of LeechBlock is admirable enough, although the fact that you set the password for accessing sites means it's not really going to stop you if you get tempted. I'd be more likely to use it as a way of blocking annoying sites or other people accessing sites on my machine.

If you really can't trust yourself not to keep checking your email every two minutes or get distracted playing poker when you should be working, LeechBlock can help you break the habit.

Monitor your PC's temperature

Real Temp is a system monitoring application that keeps an eye on your Intel CPU temperature, so you can tell if you're over working your PC.

It's a tiny, lightweight application that won't put any more strain on your computer itself. It shows you the core temperature in the system tray, and has it's own window with more information. Perhaps the most interesting numbers here are the load percentage and distance to TJMax figures. The first simple tells you how much of your CPU's capacity is being used, and the second tells how many degrees Celsius you are from the default maximum (90°C, though you can change it).

You can set a temperature alarm, so if your system gets very hot it can execute a command for you. You need to specify this yourself, which may not be easy for less tech savvy users. It would be better if it could be set to close hung or idle applications when the alarm temperature it reached.

For more advanced users Real Temp had lots of configuration options, and is a pretty useful system monitor. However, while it's most useful with laptops, it has to be said you can usually feel and hear when a lap top is under stress!

Real Temp is a neat app that quickly gives you the low-down on how much strain you CPU is under.

Apply the Windows 7 look & feel to Windows XP

Windows Seven RC is already out, but if you're unsure whether to try it or not, you can always start by applying the new look and fear to your current operating system.

With Seven Remix you can make Windows XP look like Windows Seven in just a few clicks. This theme includes all the eye-candy featured in Microsoft's new operating system: wallpapers, skins, cursors, system sounds, screensaver and, of course, the boot and logon screens.

Visual themes are usually difficult to install and get running. Seven Remix however can be installed in a breeze. The installation wizard walks you through the whole process and also lets you choose exactly which elements will be installed and which not. For further security, Seven Remix also creates a system restoration point before applying any changes.

On the downside, this theme only includes basic visual changes. That means you won't get Aero effects, window preview or any of the other advanced Windows 7 graphical features.

Seven Remix enables you to give your good old Windows XP a shiny, renewed Windows 7 appearance.
